Lisbon's most elegant and trendiest neighborhood is where everyone meets for coffee, shopping, or before dinner and a night out in neighboring Bairro Alto.
Most of the buildings are from the 1700s, although many were restored in the 1990s by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, after their destruction by a devastating fire in 1988. It's a neighborhood that flashes back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the "Belle Époque" when writers such as Fernando Pessoa and Eça de Queiroz used to write at the now-historic cafés. It's also the neighborhood of theaters, of charming old bookshops and major international brands, giving it a lively cosmopolitan ambience at any time of the day.

The old "Ourivesaria Aliança" jewelry store has been taken over by an international brand, but maintains its monumental interior from 1909, making it one of the most beautiful shops in town.

The Old Elevator
O Elevador Antigo
One of the first (and most beautiful) elevators in Europe was installed in the Ramiro Leão department store, now a Benetton shop. It’s on number 83 of Rua Garrett, and the elevator, which is over a century old and now out of service, can be seen on the 4th floor.
The open doors reveal an Art Nouveau-style interior, with mirrors framed in gilt with floral motifs. The velvet-upholstered stools were for the ladies, who sat during the short journey.
Um dos primeiros (e mais belos) elevadores da Europa foi instalado nos armazéns Ramiro Leão, hoje uma loja Benetton. Fica no número 83 da Rua Garrett, e o elevador, com mais de um século e hoje desativado, pode ser visto no 4º andar.
As portas abertas revelam um interior decorado em estilo Arte Nova, com espelhos emoldurados com motivos vegetalistas em talha dourada. Os bancos estofados com veludo eram onde as senhoras se sentavam durante a curta viagem.
The Cobblestone QR Code
O Código QR em Calçada Portuguesa
A QR code, measuring about one square meter and formed by the traditional Portuguese cobblestone, was created on Rua Garrett by the Benard café. You just need to point your smartphone to get tourist information about the neighborhood (in Portuguese and English), and will even hear the noise of the pavers working on their art.
Um código QR com cerca de um metro quadrado, feito em calçada portuguesa, foi colocado na Rua Garrett junto à pastelaria Benard. Basta apontar o smartphone para se receber informação turística sobre o bairro, em português e inglês, e ainda se ouvem os ruídos dos calceteiros durante as obras.
The Tiled Façade

Lisbon has several beautiful façades covered in tiles, but this one is perhaps the most photographed of all. It dates back to 1863, and illustrates mythological figures representing Earth, Water, Science, Agriculture, Commerce and Industry.
The star at the top is the Eye of Providence.
