1 | A Guided Tour of the National Theater D. Maria II

The beautiful National Theater D. Maria II, which dates from 1846, opens its doors on Mondays for multilingual guided tours. As you go through the different spaces of the monument, you get to know its historical and artistic heritage, getting up close to the wardrobe and props, and even peeking into the dressing rooms.

2 | One of the World's Most Beautiful Train Stations

A monumental neo-Manueline façade has placed the Rossio train station, inaugurated in 1886, on lists of the world’s most beautiful. Every tourist stops for a photo, usually before stepping inside and heading to Sintra.

3 | A Beautiful Ruin

St. Dominic’s Church was once a monastery built in 1241, but the 1755 earthquake left it quite damaged. The church, facing the D. Maria II National Theater, was rebuilt, but a devastating fire in 1959 left it in the state that you see today. Despite that, it remains one of Lisbon’s most beautiful and most unforgettable monuments.

4 | A Shot of Ginjinha

This iconic “ginjinha” bar, almost directly across from the D. Maria II National Theater, opened in 1840. It only has space for just over three people at a time, but it’s a spot where regular customers and tourists get together for a shot of the famous brandy with morello cherry.

The beautiful Azevedo Rua hat shop, opened in 1886, still features the original wooden cabinets and still offers all kinds of hats.

The bar and restaurant of the Internacional Design Hotel overlooks the square, and in addition to serving lunch and dinner, it also offers tea and “petiscos” (tapas) in the afternoon.

7 | One of the City's Most Beautiful Façades

South of the square, past the arch, is Animatógrafo do Rossio, one of the first movie theaters in Portugal. It opened in 1907 and was considered a luxurious theater at the time. Sadly, today it only offers peep shows, but it preserves the beautiful Art Nouveau façade, which has been considered one of the world’s most beautiful in a movie theater of the period.

7 | Uma das Mais Belas Fachadas da Cidade

O Animatógrafo do Rossio encontra-se a sul da praça, atravessando o Arco da Bandeira. Foi um dos primeiros cinemas em Portugal, e quando abriu em 1907 era considerado um cinema de luxo. Infelizmente hoje apenas apresenta espetáculos eróticos (“peep shows”), mas preserva a bela fachada em Arte Nova, reconhecida internacionalmente como uma das mais belas num cinema da época.

Café Nicola is one of the few historic cafés in downtown Lisbon that have survived to this day. It dates from 1929, and from the tables at the door you see the castle and the world go by in the square.

9 | An Artful Shop

In business since 1875, Tabacaria Mónaco was remodeled in 1894 with a ceiling painted by the artist António Ramalho and tiles by Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro. No changes have been made to the décor or to the furnishings since then, and an impressive bronze lamp still welcomes customers who still come looking for cigarettes and international newspapers and magazines.

Aberta desde 1875, a Tabacaria Mónaco foi remodelada em 1894 com um teto pintado pelo artista António Ramalho e azulejos de Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro. Nunca houve alterações na decoração e no mobiliário, e um notável candeeiro em bronze ainda dá as boas vindas aos clientes que ainda procuram tabaco e jornais e revistas internacionais.

10 | One of the First "Gourmet Shops"

Owned by the same family since it opened in 1923, Pérola do Rossio was a "gourmet shop" before there was such a thing as a gourmet shop. It has always offered coffee from the world's largest producers (Brazil, São Tomé e Príncipe and Colombia, among others), and teas from China, Japan, India and the Azores. The small interior, which maintains the original décor, also has chocolates, jams, cheeses and wines.

10 | Uma das Primeiras "Lojas Gourmet"

Propriedade da mesma família desde que abriu em 1923, a Pérola do Rossio já era uma “loja gourmet” antes da moda das lojas gourmet. Sempre ofereceu cafés dos maiores produtores do mundo (Brasil, São Tomé e Príncipe e Colômbia, entre outros), e chás da China, Japão, Índia e Açores. O pequeno espaço, que mantém a decoração original, tem ainda chocolates, compotas, queijos e vinhos.
