This palace is still inhabited by the descendants of the noblemen who inaugurated it in 1675. The interior is therefore only accessible on a guided tour, but it’s also possible to visit just the magnificent garden. You’re taken through the library, the chapel and several rooms covered with historical Portuguese and Dutch tiles, including panels illustrating the Portuguese Restoration War.
The garden is another gallery of tiled art, with one of the world’s richest collections. It also shows the busts of all Portuguese kings up to the 1800s. Almost everything has great symbolism, with fountains and statues recalling the arts and mythology. Pieces of Ming porcelain used to serve the king during the palace’s inauguration, which, following tradition, couldn’t be used a second time, now ornament a fountain.
The palace is located outside the center. To get there, you have to take the Metro to Jardim Zoológico station, then hop on bus 770 (the stop is found following the signs pointing in the direction of Estrada de Benfica and Rua das Furnas as you step out of the Metro).
Este palácio ainda é habitado pelos descendentes dos marqueses que o inauguraram em 1675. As visitas ao interior são por isso guiadas, mas também é possível visitar apenas o magnífico jardim. Passa-se pela biblioteca, pela capela e por salas cobertas de azulejos históricos portugueses e holandeses, incluindo painéis que reconstituem a Guerra da Restauração.
O jardim é outra galeria de azulejos e considerado um dos mais ricos exemplos de azulejaria do mundo. Expõe também os bustos de todos os reis portugueses até ao século XIX. Quase tudo tem uma forte simbologia, com fontes e estátuas fazendo referência às artes e à mitologia. Cacos do serviço de louça Ming usado para servir o rei durante a inauguração do palácio, e que, segundo a tradição, não podiam voltar a ser utilizados, ornamentam uma fonte.
O palácio encontra-se afastado do centro histórico e turístico da cidade. Para lá chegar é preciso ir de metro até à estação do Jardim Zoológico, e depois seguir no autocarro 770 (a paragem encontra-se seguindo indicações para a Estrada de Benfica e Rua das Furnas à saída do metro).
