This Mannerist monument is one of the most beautiful Lisbon attractions, not just for its magnificent interior (which has the world's largest collection of Baroque tiles -- about 100,000), but also for the panoramic view over the city from the terrace by the towers. It was founded in 1147 and rebuilt in 1582 outside the city walls, hence the "de Fora" ("on the Outside") in the name.
The church (which has free admission) has an imposing baroque altar and eight monumental sculptures, but is not always open. The monastery next door, however, is regularly open for visits, allowing you to see the ancient cistern, the cloisters covered with magnificent tiles, the beautiful sacristy, a museum of sacred art, and the pantheon of the Bragança dynasty, which includes the tomb of Catherine of Braganza, the Portuguese princess who became queen of England when she married Charles II in 1662. Most noteworthy, however, is the extraordinary series of 38 tiles that illustrate the famous fables of La Fontaine.

Foi fundado em 1147 e reconstruído em 1582 fora das muralhas da cidade, e daí o "de Fora" no nome.
A igreja (que tem entrada livre) apresenta um imponente altar barroco e oito esculturas monumentais, mas nem sempre se encontra de portas abertas. Já o mosteiro abre regularmente para visitas, permitindo ver a antiga cisterna, os claustros cobertos de magníficos azulejos, a bela sacristia, um museu de arte sacra, e o panteão dos reis da dinastia Bragança, que inclui o túmulo de Catarina de Bragança, a princesa portuguesa que se tornou rainha de Inglaterra ao casar-se com Carlos II em 1662. O mais notável é, no entanto, a extraordinária série de 38 painéis de azulejos que contam as famosas fábulas de La Fontaine.
