This small square is named after a fountain built here in the 13th century, but which may have Roman origins. It’s been named Chafariz de Dentro (“Inner Fountain”) since the 1300s, due to its location inside the city’s medieval wall, but it was originally called Chafariz dos Cavalos (“Fountain of the Horses”), for its bronze spouts shaped like a horse’s head. Over the centuries it quenched the thirst of the people of Alfama and their animals, and was even used as a tank to wash clothes.
Restored in 1622 and again in 1872, it was neglected for much of the 20th century, until a new restoration in 2017, when it regained its drinking water.
Across from the fountain is a former reservoir, built in 1868 as a solution to the city’s lack of water. The building was restored in 1998, when it was turned into the Fado Museum.
Other attractions around the square are the traditional old houses (some from the 1600s) that are now renovated, many with outdoor cafés and restaurants where tourists sit in the sun. From here you can also see the Church of St. Stephan, and, heading in the direction of Rua de São Pedro, two curious Ionic columns. These hold up the façade of a building, and may have come from a church that was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, or perhaps from a portico on the fountain.
Other buildings that survived the earthquake are found nearby on Rua dos Remédios, one of Lisbon's most picturesque streets.
Este pequeno largo tem o nome de um chafariz construído no local no século XIII, mas que poderá ter origem romana. Só se chama Chafariz de Dentro desde o século XIV (por se situar dentro da muralha fernandina), pois originalmente tinha o nome de Chafariz dos Cavalos, pelas suas bicas de bronze em forma de cabeça de cavalo. Ao longo dos séculos matou a sede da população de Alfama e dos seus animais, e até serviu de tanque para lavar a roupa.
Foi restaurado em 1622 e novamente em 1872, e ficou esquecido durante grande parte do século XX, até um novo restauro em 2017, em que voltou a jorrar água potável.
Em frente fica a antiga Estação Elevatória de Águas de Alfama, um reservatório construído em 1868 para resolver o problema de falta de água na cidade. O edifício foi recuperado em 1998, ano em que abriu como Museu do Fado.
Outras atrações do largo são as típicas casas (algumas do século XVII) que se encontram hoje recuperadas, e os vários cafés e restaurantes com esplanadas, onde turistas se sentam ao sol. Daqui também se vê a Igreja de Santo Estêvão, e, seguindo em direção à Rua de São Pedro, duas curiosas colunas jónicas. Estas amparam a frente de um prédio, e terão sido aproveitadas de uma igreja que ruiu no terramoto de 1755, ou até mesmo de um pórtico do chafariz.
Outras construções que resistiram ao terramoto encontram-se na vizinha Rua dos Remédios, uma das mais pitorescas da cidade.
