CONVENTO DOS CARDAES, Lisboa

Considered one of the most original 17th-century baroque convents, mixing gilt, paintings, tiles and marble, this monument dates from 1677, but was only completed in 1703. The sober exterior contrasts with the rich baroque and rococo interior, with walls covered with Portuguese and Dutch tiles by Jan van Oort, and eight paintings by several artists of the time with golden frames. This blending of tile and gilt is typical of Portuguese baroque, and this is one of the most notable examples in Lisbon.
The building is still occupied by Dominican nuns, so it only opens for visits in the afternoon. During the Christmas season, it offers tea and brunch in the small cloister.

Este é considerado um dos conventos barrocos mais originais do século XVII, misturando a talha dourada, pintura, azulejos e mármore. Começou a ser construído em 1677 e ficou concluído em 1703, com uma rica decoração joanina e rococó no interior contrastando com o exterior sóbrio. Os azulejos portugueses e holandeses de Jan van Oort forram as paredes da igreja, e a talha dourada emoldura oito telas de vários artistas da época. Esta união entre o azulejo e a talha dourada é típica do barroco português, e este é um dos mais notáveis exemplos em Lisboa.
O edifício ainda é habitado pelas Irmãs Dominicanas, por isso abre apenas à tarde. Durante a época de Natal realiza-se um chá e um brunch no pequeno claustro.
