Lisbon's clean, artful subway opened in 1959 and is still expanding. It has four lines connecting downtown's waterfront to the northern districts and the suburbs of Amadora and Odivelas. It does not, however, reach the Belém district or the heart of Alfama. Still, it is the most efficient way to get to many of the city's attractions and hotels between the hours of 6:30AM and 1AM.
Trains run every couple of minutes during rush hour, and every 5-7 minutes at all other times.
Rides are free with the Lisboa Card, otherwise you'll need to buy your ticket from the machines found at every station. Be sure to keep your ticket handy because you'll need to scan it again to exit.
Artistic projects decorate most of the stations, including themed tiled walls by contemporary artists. The red line is the most impressive, but other stations of this underground gallery feature works by prominent Portuguese artists: Vieira da Silva in Rato and Cidade Universitária, Júlio Pomar in Alto dos Moinhos, and Maria Keil in most of the stations of the green and yellow lines.

As viagens são gratuitas com o Lisboa Card, mas quem não é turista pode adquirir bilhetes nas máquinas que se encontram em todas as estações. É importante manter o bilhete sempre à mão, pois precisa de ser apresentado novamente à saída.
Vários projetos artísticos decoram a maioria das estações, incluindo painéis de azulejos de artistas contemporâneos. A linha vermelha é a mais impressionante, mas outras estações desta galeria subterrânea também apresentam obras de destacados artistas portugueses: Vieira da Silva nas estações do Rato e Cidade Universitária, Júlio Pomar na do Alto dos Moinhos, e Maria Keil na maioria das estações das linhas verde e amarela.
