Portugal's "national gallery" is the Ancient Art Museum, opened in 1884 in a 17th-century palace.
Its most significant works include Hieronymus Bosch's "Temptation of Saint Anthony" and Albrecht Dürer's "Saint Jerome," but the main highlight is a 15th century masterpiece attributed to Portuguese artist Nuno Gonçalves, called the "Panels of St. Vincent." It's one of the first collective portraits in European art, showing sixty portraits of various personalities, believed to be venerating Saint Vincent. One of them is Prince Henry the Navigator in his most famous illustration.
In addition to painting, there is also a collection of sculpture and decorative arts, much of it related to the Age of Discovery, when Portugal made Europe's first cultural exchanges with Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Of particular interest is the Monstrance of Belém, made with gems and gold brought back by Vasco da Gama, and Japanese screens showing the Portuguese arriving in Japan.

Entre as obras mais emblemáticas estão "As Tentações de Santo Antão" de Hieronymus Bosch e "São Jerónimo" de Dürer, mas a grande obra prima são os Painéis de São Vicente, do século XV, atribuídos a Nuno Gonçalves. Representam sessenta figuras que se acredita estarem a venerar São Vicente, sendo uma delas o Infante Dom Henrique no seu retrato mais conhecido.
Juntamente com a de pintura, há também uma coleção de escultura e de artes decorativas, em grande parte relacionadas com a época dos Descobrimentos, quando Portugal criou os primeiros laços entre a Europa e a Ásia, África e Américas. Aqui o destaque vai para a Custódia de Belém, feita de preciosidades trazidas por Vasco da Gama, e para os Biombos Nanban que retratam a chegada dos portugueses ao Japão.
Após uma visita ao museu não deixe de passar pelo jardim, que oferece uma esplanada com vista sobre o Tejo.
