As the world’s tile capital and having the only museum dedicated to the art of tile painting, Lisbon holds several exceptional masterpieces. They’re mostly Portuguese mixed with a few Dutch creations, on display in churches and convents, as well as in the National Tile Museum.

Como capital mundial do azulejo e tendo o único museu dedicado a essa arte, Lisboa reúne várias obras primas notáveis. A maioria são criações portuguesas, sendo as outras de artistas holandeses, espalhadas por igrejas e conventos, e pelo Museu Nacional do Azulejo.

“Retrato de Senhora” – Museu do Azulejo

Mixing the neo-classical and the romantic styles, this is a piece from about 1820. It stands out for the quality of the pigments and for the techniques used, especially the extraordinary transparency effect. This effect is one of the difficulties of tile painting, as it’s impossible to guarantee a final result after heating. The fact that it has been achieved here shows the mastery of the anonymous painter: Looking at the hat of the lady portrayed we notice the existence of a veil over the face which is one of the very few times the effect was tried on tile. This panel was part of a set that included three others which are now in private collections outside Portugal.

Misturando os gostos do neoclássico e do romantismo, esta é uma obra de cerca de 1820. Destaca-se pela qualidade dos pigmentos e pelas técnicas utilizadas, especialmente no extraordinário efeito de transparência. Esse efeito é uma das dificuldades da pintura cerâmica, pois é impossível assegurar um resultado final após a cozedura. O facto de ter sido conseguido aqui revela a mestria do pintor anónimo: Observando o chapéu da senhora retratada percebe-se a existência de um véu sobre o rosto, um efeito muito poucas vezes tentado na pintura em azulejo. Este painél fazia parte de um conjunto com outros três que se encontram agora em coleções particulares fora de Portugal.

Retábulo Nossa Senhora da Vida – Museu do Azulejo

One of the first tile masterpieces, this is a group of 1498 tiles created in 1580. Attributed to the artist Marçal de Matos, it once covered the Chapel of Our Lady of Life in the Church of St. Andrew which stood near the castle. It represents the birth of Jesus and uses shading to create the illusion of depth.

Uma das primeiras obras-primas da azulejaria, este é um conjunto de 1498 azulejos criado em 1580. Atribuido ao pintor Marçal de Matos, cobriu a Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vida na igreja de Santo André que se situava próximo do castelo. Representa o nascimento de Jesus e usa uma grande quantidade de tonalidades para criar a ilusão de tridimensionalidade.

“Litanias da Virgem” – Igreja das Mercês

Of all the greatest tile works, this is perhaps the least known, as it’s found hidden in a hallway that’s almost always closed. It’s one of the most original and most remarkable sets of tiles in Lisbon, dating from 1714. It was created by master Antonio de Oliveira Bernardes and is a vaulted ceiling completely covered with Baroque tiles evoking the Litanies of the Virgin Mary.

De todas as grandes obras da azulejaria esta é talvez a menos conhecida, encontrando-se escondida numa sala de passagem quase sempre fechada. É um dos mais originais e mais notáveis conjuntos azulejares de Lisboa, datado de 1714. Foi criado pelo mestre António de Oliveira Bernardes e trata-se de um teto abobadado completamente coberto de azulejos barrocos evocando as Litanias da Virgem.

“Milagre de São Roque” – Igreja de São Roque

This remarkable group of tiles is considered the world’s 16th-century tile masterpiece. Completed in 1584 by the master Francisco de Matos, it stands out for the monumentality of the motifs, for its perfect integration into the architecture and for the quality of the paintings on a yellow background. It represents a “Miracle of St. Roch” among floral motifs in a technical perfection usually only found in oil painting.

Este notável conjunto de azulejos é considerado a obra-prima da azulejaria mundial do final do século XVI. Completado em 1584, é da autoria do mestre Francisco de Matos, destacando-se pela monumentalidade dos motivos, pela sua adaptação perfeita à arquitetura e pelo rigor do traço sob fundo amarelo. Representa um “Milagre de São Roque” entre motivos florais numa perfeição que remete para a técnica de pintura a óleo.

Santa Teresa de Jan van Oort – Convento dos Cardaes

These Dutch tiles are the only ones signed by the artist Jan van Oort from Amsterdam and they were placed in this convent in 1692. They’re eight panels depicting scenes from the life of Saint Teresa of Avila in blue and white, based on her autobiography.

Estes azulejos holandeses são os únicos assinados pelo artista Jan van Oort de Amesterdão e foram colocados neste convento em 1692. São oito painéis representando cenas da vida de Santa Teresa d’Ávila em azul e branco, baseadas na sua autobiografia.

“O Casamento da Galinha” – Museu do Azulejo

This is one of the most enigmatic tile panels of all time. Created in 1665, its meaning is unknown, but it depicts a chicken in a carriage on its way to a ceremony which is believed to be its wedding. It’s the only bird in the painting, as all the other characters are monkeys. It surely has a satirical purpose, with the monkeys used to ridicule the behaviors and basic instincts of human beings, exemplified in one of them shown urinating in public. The chicken may be a maternal figure, perhaps a queen.

É das obras em azulejo mais enigmáticas de todos os tempos. Criada em 1665, o seu significado é desconhecido, mas representa uma galinha numa carruagem a caminho de alguma cerimónia que se julga ser o seu casamento. É a única ave da pintura, pois todas as outras personagens são macacos. Terá um sentido satírico, sendo os macacos usados para ridicularizar os comportamentos e instintos mais baixos do ser humano como um que se vê aqui a urinar em público. Já a galinha poderá ser uma imagem maternal, quem sabe uma rainha.

Sala das Batalhas – Palácio Fronteira

More important as a historical document than for its artistic quality, this tile panel is one of the most unusual in the history of tile painting. It tells the story of eight battles of Portugal’s Restoration War and was created between 1669 and 1673. It’s based on eyewitness accounts, making it a unique work.

Vale mais como documento histórico do que pela qualidade da pintura, mas este conjunto de azulejos é um dos mais invulgares da história da azulejaria. Narra a história de oito batalhas da Guerra da Restauração e terá sido criado entre 1669 e 1673. Baseou-se em testemunhos oculares, sendo por isso uma obra única.

Painéis La Fontaine – Mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora

The monastery of São Vicente de Fora has the largest collection of Baroque tiles in the world and among the approximately 100,000 works are 38 panels illustrating the fables of La Fontaine. They date from between 1740 and 1750 and were created by one of the most important masters of tile painting, Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes. They were placed in the cloisters of the church for the morality depicted in the images but are now individually shown in the convent accompanied by the texts telling each story.

O mosteiro de São Vicente de Fora tem a maior coleção de azulejos barrocos do mundo, e entre os cerca de 100,000 estão 38 painéis ilustrando as fábulas de La Fontaine. São obras criadas entre 1740 e 1750 por um dos mestres mais importantes da pintura em azulejo, Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes. Foram colocadas nos claustros da igreja devido ao seu conteúdo moral, mas estão agora individualmente expostas no convento acompanhadas dos textos com cada uma das histórias.

Galeria das Artes – Palácio Fronteira

This extraordinary work from about 1670 is a set of tiles covering a terrace. Most are blue and white, showing eight panels of female allegorical figures representing poetry and the seven liberal arts of the classical world: grammar, arithmetic, music, logic, rhetoric, geometry and astronomy.

Esta obra extraordinária de cerca de 1670 é um conjunto de azulejos que forra completamente um terraço. A maioria é em azul e branco, destacando-se oito painéis com figuras alegóricas femininas representando a poesia e as sete artes liberais: gramática, aritmética, música, dialética, rétorica, geometria e astronomia.

Grande Vista de Lisboa – Museu do Azulejo

This tile panel is 23 meters long and illustrates the city of Lisbon before the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1755. It was created in 1700 and is a masterpiece because it’s as close as you get to an 18th-century panoramic photograph. It was the first work of an artist with an academic background and shows 14 kilometers of riverfront, passing through Belém, Baixa and Alfama, depicting churches, palaces, convents and houses. It belonged to a palace that stood near the castle of St. George and the goal was a bird’s-eye perspective or “God’s view” of the city.

Este painel de azulejos tem 23 metros e ilustra a cidade de Lisboa antes da destruição causada pelo terramoto de 1755. Terá sido criado em 1700 e é uma obra prima por ser uma espécie de fotografia panorâmica do século XVIII. Foi dos primeiros trabalhos de um artista com formação académica, e nele estão representados 14 quilómetros de costa, passando por Belém, Baixa e Alfama, retratando igrejas, palácios, conventos e casas de habitação. Pertenceu a um palácio que se situava perto do castelo de São Jorge, e o objetivo era a perspetiva de uma ave ou “o olhar de Deus” sobre a cidade.

Almost all in wood, this eccentric bar was originally a grocery store. Its décor is a fantasy world, with cabinets full of thousands of precious collector’s items, from Art Deco pieces to earthenware with two centuries of history.
Everything is illuminated by a dim light that creates a welcoming environment to end the day with a cocktail, further helping to make this a must-go destination in the city — personalities such as Tony Blair and Hillary Clinton were the most famous visitors.

Quase todo em madeira, este excêntrico bar começou por ser uma mercearia. A sua decoração é um mundo de fantasia, com armários cheios de milhares de preciosidades de colecionador, desde peças de Art Deco a faiança com dois séculos de história.

The décor is a mixture of the Art Nouveau and “grandma’s house” styles, creating an intimate atmosphere. There are two “vintage” rooms with walls covered with the magazine that gave the bar its name, with mirrors, woodwork and marble.

A former guesthouse where ladies of the world’s oldest profession got together with sailors is now one of the most popular bars in town. This is due to a relaxed ambience but also to a décor recalling the history of the building. The ceilings were painted with frescoes, the walls are covered with mirrors, paintings and old posters, and decorative pieces give the space an old burlesque atmosphere spread through several rooms.

Uma antiga pensão onde senhoras da mais antiga profissão do mundo se juntavam com marinheiros é agora um dos bares mais concorridos da cidade. Isso deve-se ao ambiente descontraído mas também à decoração que lembra a história do edifício. Os tetos foram pintados com frescos; espelhos, quadros e posters antigos forram as paredes, e peças decorativas antigas dão um ar burlesco ao espaço que é dividido em várias salas.

SOLAR DO VINHO DO PORTO

It opened in 1946 but has recently been remodelled by renowned designer Paulo Lobo. It maintains a classic refinement but with a modern elegance, mixing renovated tiles in the blue tasting room and bottles covering the walls of the main room. The result is a classy atmosphere perfect for the tasting of the various types of port wine.

Foi inaugurado em 1946 mas foi remodelado recentemente pelo reconhecido designer Paulo Lobo. Mantém a sofisticação clássica mas não deixa de ter uma elegância moderna, misturando azulejos recuperados na sala de provas em tons de azul e uma garrafeira nas paredes do salão principal. K URBAN BEACH

All the beauty is in the backdrop which is the river Tagus, but the minimalist contemporary design also helps make this space one of the most attractive in the city. Actually it’s several spaces in one, concentrating bar and restaurants that are sophisticated but relaxed, as the sand placed on the riverfront creates a chilled-out beach vibe at any time of the year.

Toda a beleza está no pano de fundo que é o Tejo, mas a decoração minimalista de design contemporâneo também ajuda a fazer deste espaço um dos mais atraentes da cidade. Opened in 1972, this bar remains popular due to its inviting ambience. It’s completely decorated with pieces from different periods, particularly Art Nouveau.

VOYAGE VOYAGE

The décor takes us on a trip to Southeast Asia from where the various statues of volcanic stone were imported. One of the walls is Lisbon’s medieval wall, to be admired from the dark wooden tables where a variety of cocktails can be enjoyed.

Entering this bar is stepping back decades to the early 20th century. It’s modeled after English pubs and its curious Art Deco décor is from the creator of Pavilhão Chinês. It has several cozy rooms and an outdoor terrace.

MATIZ POMBALINA

The atmosphere and the cocktail service are contemporary but the décor is tastefully classic. The interior maintains elements of the original 18th-century building and the furniture also remembers the past with Louis XV-style armchairs and with reproductions of antique tiles on the terrace.

O ambiente e o serviço de cocktails é contemporâneo mas a decoração é de um bom gosto clássico. O interior mantém a traça pombalina do edifício e o mobiliário também lembra o passado, com cadeirões estilo Luís XV numa das salas e reproduções de azulejos antigos no pátio.

This is one of the most curious bars in the city, as it’s found in a water reservoir of the city’s aqueduct. Instead of water it now supplies wine, served together with small dishes in a well-lit stone interior.

It’s one of the most iconic cafés in the city for nearly a century, having been an exclusive space with a doorman selecting patrons. Times have changed and it’s now open to everyone, but it maintains a sophisticated and monumental Art Nouveau décor: mirrors, stucco ceilings, chandeliers and wooden furnishings.

The most photographed statue in the city stands (sits) outside this café, but that’s not the main attraction. That statue is of poet Fernando Pessoa who frequented this space opened in 1905, and the reason why tourists and locals are still attracted to its tables is because it’s a true Lisbon monument. The interior takes us back to the Belle Epoque, with woodwork, mirrors and modernist paintings.

It’s one of the must-go spots in the city, a pastry shop that draws all attention to its custard tarts, making everyone overlook the beauty of its interior. With walls covered with blue and white tiles, it’s a space that takes us to the past, all the way to the business’ foundation in 1837.

An old warehouse with stone walls and arched ceilings was transformed into one of the most beautiful and charming cafés in Lisbon. The curious décor consists of old armchairs, sofas, radios, tables that are actually antique sewing machines, and photographs of silent film stars on the walls.

Uma antiga arrecadação com paredes de pedra e tetos arqueados foi transformada num dos mais belos e charmosos cafés da cidade. Serving milk and coffee for over a century, this is one of the few old spots that still remember and respect their origins. The décor is filled with history, beginning with the 1907 Art Nouveau façade covered with tile panels. Inside are stucco ornamentations with floral motifs and more tiles with rustic themes.
The counter and wooden tables, as well as an old gas lamp complete the century-old atmosphere.

From outside no one can imagine what’s found behind the door. It’s a small but ornately-decorated space, with a vaulted ceiling, marble columns and many golden details.

Do exterior ninguém imagina o que é esta pastelaria do outro lado da porta. É um espaço pequeno mas profusamente decorado, com um teto abobadado, colunas de mármore e muitos detalhes dourados.

CULTURA DO CHÁ

Frequented mostly by young groups of friends, this tea house was remodeled in 2011 and is now more sophisticated, especially the décor. Next to stone walls are sofas and armchairs that mix well with vintage, classic and rustic pieces, creating a welcoming and cozy ambience that’s perfect on colder days.

Frequentada sobretudo por jovens, esta casa de chá foi remodelada em 2011, sendo agora mais requintada, começando pela decoração. Junto às paredes de pedra estão sofás e poltronas que se misturam com peças vintage, clássicas e rústicas que no seu conjunto tornam o espaço convidativo e acolhedor especialmente nos dias mais frios.

Stepping into this café is entering the 1930s or 40s. All decorative details are reminiscent of that era, from the old photographs on the walls to the stained glass ceiling.

QUINOA

It’s a modern café and bakery, but for many years it was an antiques shop. The current space maintains a classic refinement, with a wooden door and interior staircase recalling the elegance of the past while the tables and shelves are contemporary.

É um café e padaria moderna mas o espaço que durante anos foi um antiquário mantém um requinte clássico. As mesas e as prateleiras são contemporâneas mas a porta de madeira e a escadaria interior foram cuidadosamente mantidas lembrando o Chiado elegante de outras épocas.

CHÁ DA LAPA

Hidden on a street parallel to the Ancient Art Museum, this tea house opened in the 1980s but the décor makes it look like it dates from an earlier time. In the first room are small wrought iron tables and in the second are comfortable sofas against dark-wood walls.

Escondida numa rua paralela ao Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, esta casa de chá abriu nos anos 80 mas a decoração fá-la parecer de uma época anterior. Na primeira sala estão mesas de ferro e na segunda encontram-se sofás confortáveis junto a paredes de madeira escura.

Be blown away by the view from this terrace on the 9th floor of Mundial Hotel. The castle is so close you can almost touch it, and you can see almost all of downtown and Chiado. It opens for pre-dinner drinks but also invites you to end the night with a cocktail to the sound of jazz.

Found at the top of the Tivoli Hotel, this is a lounge area with sofas where you can gaze out to the river, to the castle and downtown. It offers a good list of cocktails (including non-alcoholic) and there is also a choice of snacks. It opens late in the afternoon, but only in the warmer months, usually between May and September.

Hidden on a street behind Santa Apolonia Station, this terrace has a train-inspired décor. The seats have in fact already been part of old trains, and their positioning make it feel like you’re about to depart to another place. Lisbon feels far away but the Tagus river stays in sight, a beautiful presence as you enjoy a drink, a chat and live musical performances.

Escondido numa rua atrás da estação de Santa Apolónia, este espaço tem uma decoração alusiva ao mundo ferroviário. This colorful terrace faces east, also through its exotic décor inspired by India and zen ambiences. A Hindu goddess is illustrated on a wall, observing the service that includes light meals and drinks for a relaxed afternoon or evening.

Lisbon is looking for and beginning to attract new blood. Europe’s forgotten “sleeping beauty” of the 20th century woke up after 1998’s World Fair, and local and foreign residents are injecting doses of cutting-edge creativity despite all the economic hardships. It’s on its way to becoming one of the places to be in Europe, to live and do business in (confirmed by the Financial Times/fDi Magazine which for the first time placed Lisbon on a list of “European Cities & Regions of the Future” 2012-13). Here’s why:

Lisboa procura e começa a atrair sangue novo. A “bela adormecida” da Europa durante o século XX acordou depois da Expo 98 e lisboetas e estrangeiros têm injetado inovação na cidade apesar de todas as dificuldades económicas. Lisboa está a caminho de tornar-se uma das cidades mais atraentes da Europa, para viver e para investir (confirmado pelo Financial Times/Revista fDi que pela primeira vez colocou a capital portuguesa numa lista de “Cidades e Regiões Europeias do Futuro” 2012-13). Eis porquê:

1| LOCATION
One of the main advantages of being in Lisbon is that it’s the closest European capital to the United States and to South America, particularly to booming Brazil. There are more flights from Lisbon to more cities in the former Portuguese colony than from any other city in the world. Lisbon also maintains privileged ties to its former African colonies, especially Angola. It’s also less than one hour away from Madrid with several flights every day, and about two and a half hours from Paris and London (it’s the only capital in mainland Europe sharing the same time zone with the British capital).
Being on the edge of Europe also means that the ports of Lisbon, Sines and Setúbal are gateways to the old continent and to a market of 250 million Portuguese speakers around the world.

1| LOCALIZAÇÃO

With close to 300 days of sunshine throughout the year, no snow, and temperatures that never reach the freezing point, Lisbon is a truly blessed city. It’s great living in a place where you can have beach days in October or March, where you can sit comfortably outside at a café terrace in February, and where you don’t have to worry about the dangers of snow on the ground.

2| CLIMA
Com cerca de 300 dias de sol durante o ano, sem neve e temperaturas que nunca chegam a baixo de zero, Lisboa é uma cidade verdadeiramente abençoada. 3| SAFETY
Lisbon officially has the lowest homicide rate of any European capital and the lowest number of residents who have been victims of any crime in the previous five years, making it Europe’s safest capital. Naturally as a big city that doesn’t mean it’s crime-free, and you do hear reports of petty crime like pickpocketing and car break-ins are not that uncommon. But compare Lisbon’s safety issues with that of any major city in the world and you begin to get a sense of how much safer and lucky you really are in Lisbon.

3| SEGURANÇA
É oficialmente a capital com a menor taxa de homicídios na Europa e com o menor número de residentes que foram vítimas de qualquer crime nos últimos cinco anos, sendo por isso a capital mais segura do continente. Obviamente como em qualquer outra grande cidade isso não significa que o crime não existe, e ouve-se falar de pequenos delitos como o roubo de carteiras e assaltos a automóveis que não são muito infrequentes. Mas comparando a criminalidade de Lisboa com a de qualquer grande cidade do mundo dá-se graças pela segurança que os lisboetas ainda têm.

4| QUALITY OF LIFE
Safety and agreeable weather are just two factors that contribute to a high quality of life in Lisbon. Freedom, human rights, a stable democracy, recreation facilities and leisure time also make the Portuguese capital one of the best places to live in Europe. Residents can be at the beach just minutes from downtown, or enjoy nature in several green spaces such as Monsanto, the largest urban forest in Europe. Golf, surfing (Europe’s first surfing reserve is 30 minutes away) and other outdoor activities are also more accessible here that in other European capitals.
The people of Lisbon live complaining about everything that is wrong with their city (and they do have many reasons to, just like anywhere else), but they do live a more relaxed life at a more human pace, reflected in their long dinners, coffee breaks, and stops to enjoy the views.

4| QUALIDADE DE VIDA
Segurança e um clima agradável são apenas dois fatores que contribuem para uma elevada qualidade de vida em Lisboa. A liberdade, direitos humanos, uma democracia estável, espaços recreativos e de lazer também fazem da capital portuguesa um dos melhores lugares para se viver na Europa. Os lisboetas podem estar na praia a poucos minutos do centro da cidade, ou podem desfrutar da natureza em vários espaços verdes como Monsanto, o maior parque florestal urbano da Europa. 5| REAL ESTATE OPPORTUNITIES
When the higher classes moved to the suburbs by the sea (Cascais, Estoril and Sintra) and the middle class moved to the city’s northern districts, Lisbon’s center was abandoned to the lowest classes, especially to poor pensioners living on frozen rents. The buildings reached a shockingly advanced state of decay but in the past two decades there has been a massive effort to renovate the old historic center of the city. While it looks like most of the work still needs to be done, seeing photos of Alfama from 20 years ago shows just how much has already been achieved. As the mostly elderly population dies, younger investors renovate homes and discover the charm and the privilege of living in the center of the city.
Foreigners have also discovered Lisbon and have bought entire buildings in the older neighborhoods. The historic atmosphere also attracts tourists so the current trend is to renovate buildings and rent the apartments for short stays. Despite the renovation boom, prices haven’t gone up. That’s due to the economic crises, so those who can invest will find that there’s no better time than now, especially when in about 20 years there will be fewer opportunities and inevitably-higher prices. Formerly rigid tenancy rules have also finally been loosened up, opening up a new market for long-term rentals.

5| OPORTUNIDADES IMOBILIÁRIAS
Quando as classes mais altas mudaram-se para os subúrbios à beira-mar (Cascais, Estoril e Sintra) e a classe média mudou-se para a periferia, o centro de Lisboa ficou abandonado para as classes mais baixas, especialmente para os pensionistas que vivem com rendas congeladas. Os edifícios chegaram a um estado avançado de degradação, mas nas últimas duas décadas tem havido um esforço para renovar o centro histórico da cidade. Pode parecer que grande parte das obras estão ainda por fazer, mas olhando para fotografias de bairros como Alfama de há vinte anos atrás verifica-se o que já se conseguiu reabilitar. Com a população mais idosa a desaparecer, investidores mais jovens renovam casas e descobrem o encanto e o privilégio de viver no centro da capital.
Os estrangeiros também já descobriram Lisboa e têm adquirido edifícios inteiros nos bairros mais antigos. O ambiente histórico também atrai turistas e a tendência atual é a renovação de prédios para o aluguer de apartamentos turísticos.
Apesar do crescimento da reabilitação, os preços dos imóveis não têm subido. Isso deve-se à crise económica mas os que podem investir verão que não há melhor momento do que agora, especialmente quando num futuro próximo haverão menos oportunidades e os preços serão inevitavelmente mais altos. Além disso as antigas leis restritivas de arrendamento foram finalmente atualizadas, abrindo assim um novo mercado para o arrendamento de longa duração.

6| BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
Because the Portuguese market has become known for being open to technological innovation, it’s been used by international companies as a test for new products. It’s now much easier to do business in Portugal, and the European Union has recognized it as one of the countries that most reduced bureaucracy. It’s possible to set up a company in less than one hour, and according to the 2010 Global Benchmark Report, Portugal is the 7th country in the OECD with the lowest level of costs and taxes.

6| OPORTUNIDADES DE NEGÓCIO

Portugal is in the world’s top 10 for best road network, and while people in Lisbon will say that was in detriment of other more useful investments, it does reflect the focus on modernizing the country in the last couple of decades. The expanded airport is within 15 minutes of downtown, there’s a modern metro, new hotels and conference centers are growing businesses, and there are new world-class research centers (such as the Champalimaud Foundation which helped Portugal become the 4th country in the OECD with the biggest rate of researchers in the fields of science and engineering).

7| INFRAESTRUTURA MODERNA
Portugal situa-se entre os dez países com a melhor rede de estradas no mundo, e enquanto os portugueses dirão que existiam investimentos mais úteis, também é verdade que isto demonstra a concentração na modernização do país nas últimas décadas. O aeroporto também foi ampliado e fica a 15 minutos do centro da cidade, há uma rede de metro moderna, novos hotéis e centros de conferências são investimentos em crescimento, e existem novos centros de investigação de nível mundial (como a Fundação Champalimaud que ajuda Portugal a manter o seu quarto lugar na OCDE na maior taxa de investigadores nas áreas de ciência e engenharia).

8| INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Lisbon was the first city in Europe to set up a network of electric car recharging stations, was recognized in 2011 as having Europe’s best fiber optic network, and Portugal has pioneered services in banking (particularly ATM), telecommunications, and renewable energy (close to 60% of the electricity in the country comes from renewable sources). These are just a few examples that reveal the experience and the opportunities in innovation and technology in Lisbon.

Unlike in the rest of southern Europe, you’ll find that in Lisbon there’s a sizable multilingual population, with 42% speaking two languages (especially English) and 23% speaking at least three. Improvements in education levels also means that there’s never been a better-prepared young generation in the country entering the job market.

Ao contrário do que se verifica noutras zonas do sul da Europa, em Lisboa existe uma população multilingue considerável, com cerca de 42% a falar duas línguas (uma delas geralmente inglês) e 23% fala pelo menos três idiomas. Melhorias nos níveis de educação também significam que nunca houve uma geração jovem tão bem preparada a entrar no mercado de trabalho.

10| TOURISM GROWTH
Lisbon hasn’t yet explored its full potential as a tourism destination, meaning it’s a tourism hotspot of the future. While it’s recently been given several high-profile awards (Europe’s Best Tourist Destination, Cruise Destination and City Break in 2009’s World Travel Awards), and while it’s one of the world’s top 10 cities for corporate events, it’s still overlooked as one of Europe’s must-see capitals. It’s a growing low-cost and cruise destination, but it still doesn’t attract major markets beyond the British, Spanish, French and Italian. It receives very few Asian tourists, and despite its proximity to the United States, American tourism to the city has only now begun to have any significance. That’s due to poor marketing and a poor projection of the city’s identity. The world simply doesn’t yet associate Lisbon to any particular image, but as visitor numbers grow, so does the city’s brand. Lisbon’s future is in large part in its tourism, as it now receives more visitors than Algarve. If there is one smart investment in Lisbon, it’s in tourism, particularly in accommodation and cultural activities downtown and in historic neighborhoods.

10| CRESCIMENTO TURÍSTICO
Lisboa não tem explorado o seu verdadeiro potencial turístico, o que significa que é um destino do futuro. Foi reconhecida recentemente com prémios internacionais (Melhor Destino Turístico, Melhor Destino de Cruzeiros e Melhor “City Break” da Europa nos World Travel Awards de 2009), mas apesar de ser uma das dez principais cidades para eventos empresariais, é ainda esquecida como uma das capitais imperdíveis da Europa. Tem vindo a crescer como destino de baixo custo e de cruzeiros, mas ainda não atrai grandes mercados além do britânico, espanhol, francês e italiano. Recebe poucos turistas asiáticos, e apesar da sua proximidade aos Estados Unidos, o turismo americano na cidade só agora começa a ter alguma relevância. Isso deve-se a uma fraca divulgação e projeção da identidade da cidade. O mundo simplesmente ainda não associa qualquer imagem a Lisboa, mas com o número de visitantes a crescer surgirá uma imagem de marca da capital portuguesa. O futuro de Lisboa é em grande parte o seu turismo que já ultrapassa o do Algarve em número de estadias. Se existe um investimento seguro em Lisboa é certamente no turismo, especialmente em alojamento e atrações culturais nos bairros históricos da cidade.

After Venice, Lisbon is probably the city with the most abandoned palaces in Europe. Many are former homes of noble families whose heirs can’t agree on what to do with them, in other cases the owners simply can’t afford the renovations, and a large number are actually state-owned. While many old palaces have been converted into some of the city’s most beautiful hotels (Pestana Palace, Lapa Palace, Palácio Belmonte) or into embassies, others are run-down and waiting for investors.
Palatial or not, it would take 8 billion euros to renovate all of Lisbon’s decaying buildings, according to a report from late 2011. A number of foreign investors have bought mansions in Principe Real and historic buildings in Chiado, and others are waiting for better economic times in the euro zone. Below is a number of high-profile cases in the planning stages or reopening anew.

Depois de Veneza, Lisboa é provavelmente a cidade europeia com mais palácios abandonados. Muitos são antigas residências de famílias nobres cujos herdeiros não conseguem chegar a um acordo sobre o que fazer com eles, noutros casos os proprietários simplesmente não podem pagar as renovações necessárias, e um grande número até são propriedade do estado. Muitos palácios antigos já foram transformados em alguns dos mais belos hotéis da cidade (Pestana Palace, Lapa Palace, Palácio Belmonte) ou em embaixadas, mas outros encontram-se degradados e à espera de investidores.
Seriam necessários 8 mil milhões de euros para renovar todos os palacetes e edifícios degradados de Lisboa, segundo dados revelados nos finais de 2011. Um número de investidores estrangeiros têm comprado edifícios nos bairros do Príncipe Real e Chiado, mas muitos outros palácios encontram-se à espera de melhorias na economia da zona euro.

PALÁCIO DAS ÁGUIAS

In the district of Belém, especially on Rua da Junqueira, there are several palaces that have seen better days. One of them is that of the Águias Estate, built in the 18th century with a chapel covered in rare tiles and a large garden. It’s currently selling for a couple dozen million euros and its most probable future is a hotel. The palace has four floors with 24 rooms and is one of the forgotten architectural treasures in the city, with an interior that includes marble floors and stucco ceilings.

Em Belém, sobretudo na Rua da Junqueira, existem vários palácios que já viram melhores dias. Um deles é da Quinta das Águias, construído no século XVIII e que inclui uma capela coberta de azulejos raros e um grande jardim. Está atualmente à venda por duas dúzias de milhões de euros e o seu futuro mais provável é o de hotel. O palácio tem quatro andares com 24 divisões e é um dos tesouros arquitetónicos esquecidos da cidade, com um interior com pavimento de mármore e tetos de estuque.

PALÁCIO DA RIBEIRA GRANDE

Close to the Águias palace is the Palace of Ribeira Grande. Built in the 18th century by the Marquis of Nisa, it was also the residence of playwright João da Câmara, and had a few alterations in the 20th century to become a high school. However, many of the original features still remain, like the monumental façade, a chapel and gardens. It’s currently empty but in 2009 a renovation and expansion project was announced, for a “Museum-Hotel” that never came to be.

Bem perto do Palácio das Águias encontra-se o Palácio da Ribeira Grande. Construído no século XVIII pelos marqueses de Nisa, foi residência do dramaturgo João da Câmara e sofreu alterações no século XX para albergar uma escola secundária. No entanto, muitos dos elementos originais ainda sobrevivem, como a fachada monumental, uma capela e os jardins. Neste momento encontra-se desocupado mas em 2009 surgiu um projeto de alteração e ampliação para um “Museu-Hotel” que não foi concretizado.

PALÁCIO DA PATRIARCAL

Another reported project to become a hotel is that of Palácio da Patriarcal which remains abandoned. It’s a Baroque building of great historical importance because it was designed in 1730 by Ludovice, the architect of Mafra Palace. It was the residence of the Consul of Germany, received the visit of German princes and even of Pope John Paul II who stayed here during his visit to Lisbon in 1982. Inside there’s a monumental staircase, decorative paintings and plasters which are expected to be kept intact.

Também com projeto apresentado para transformar-se em hotel, o Palácio da Patriarcal permanece, no entanto, abandonado. É um edifício barroco de grande importância histórica, pois foi desenhado em 1730 por Ludovice, o arquiteto do Palácio de Mafra. Foi residência do cônsul da Alemanha, tendo recebido príncipes alemães e até o Papa João Paulo II que se hospedou aqui na sua visita a Lisboa em 1982. No interior existe uma escadaria monumental, pintura e estuques decorativos, que se esperam ser mantidos.

PALÁCIO VALADA E AZAMBUJA | PALACETE RUA DE BUENOS AIRES

An example where there was a careful renovation is Palace Valada e Azambuja, a building with origins in the 15th century but rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Sold in 1867 and again in 1922, it’s had several owners and has been occupied by various services, including a public library. The interior features 18th-century tiles (removed for restoration during the renovation works) and both the interior and the façade was restored in 2011 in a 5-million-euro intervention. It will continue to be occupied by the library but the remaining spaces were transformed into short-term rental apartments.

Um caso em que houve uma renovação cuidada é o do Palácio Valada e Azambuja, edifício com origem no século XV, mas reconstruído depois do terramoto de 1755. Vendido em 1867 e novamente em 1922, tem tido por isso vários proprietários ao longo dos anos, e tem sido ocupado por vários serviços, incluindo uma biblioteca municipal. O interior apresenta azulejos do século XVIII (retirados para restauro durante as obras) e tanto o interior como a fachada foram restaurados em 2011 numa intervenção avaliada em cinco milhões de euros. Continuará a ser ocupado pela biblioteca, mas os restantes espaços serão transformados em apartamentos para arrendamento de curta duração.

CONDOMÍNIO SANTA CATARINA | PALÁCIO DOS CONDES DE MESQUITELA

Down the street you’ll find a 17th-century palace that was once owned by Viscount Mesquitela. Now restored respecting the original design, it maintains a chapel and a garden, while the interior was divided into several luxury apartments.
A few steps away is yet another renovated building housing luxurious apartments, the Santa Catarina condominium. It’s an 18th-century construction now restored by renowned architect Carrilho da Graça.

Um pouco mais abaixo na mesma rua chega-se a um palácio construído no século XVII que foi propriedade do Visconde de Mesquitela. Agora restaurado respeitando a traça da obra original, mantém uma capela e um jardim, enquanto o interior foi dividido em vários apartamentos de luxo.
Subindo a rua encontra-se ainda outra obra recuperada para apartamentos luxuosos, o condomínio Santa Catarina, um edifício pombalino agora restaurado pelo reconhecido arquiteto Carrilho da Graça.

PALÁCIO SINEL DE CORDES

Another 18th-century palace, this one located on an opposite hill of the city (facing the National Pantheon) is the Sinel de Cordes Palace, vacant for several years after being a noble residence and most recently an elementary school. In early 2012 it became the headquarters of the Lisbon Architecture Triennial. The building combines elements of various styles, from neoclassical statues on the façade to a neo-Gothic staircase inside. The entire interior needs restoration work, and the Architecture Triennial will occupy the spacious noble rooms.

Outro palácio do século XVIII mas situado noutra colina da cidade (virado para o Panteão Nacional), é o Palácio Sinel de Cordes, desocupado durante vários anos depois de ser residência nobre e mais recentemente uma escola primária. No início de 2012 tornou-se a sede da Trienal de Arquitetura de Lisboa. O edifício mistura elementos de vários estilos, que vão desde estátuas neoclássicas na fachada à decoração neogótica numa escadaria interior. Todo o interior precisa de obras de recuperação, e a Trienal de Arquitetura utilizará os espaçosos salões nobres.

A proper rehabilitation of dilapidated buildings in Lisbon doesn’t always happen and sometimes it’s allegedly impossible. Many of the city’s streets have been stripped of character, with old buildings standing next to modern constructions with a completely different aesthetic. It’s the result of real estate developers only interested in profit, but fortunately the trend is for at least the façades to be untouched. There are several positive examples and an increase of those who appreciate the historic atmosphere of buildings and neighborhoods. There has also been more investment in short- and long-term rental properties and in hotels — the most lucrative projects. The demand is there, and it’s a market that’s surviving the crisis.

Uma reabilitação adequada dos edifícios degradados de Lisboa nem sempre acontece e por vezes é alegadamente impossível. Várias ruas da cidade estão por isso descaracterizadas, com edifícios antigos ao lado de construções modernas com uma estética completamente diferente. É o resultado de promotores imobiliários interessados apenas no lucro, mas felizmente a tendência é para que pelo menos as fachadas sejam mantidas. Vão surgindo exemplos positivos e há cada vez mais quem valorize o ambiente histórico dos bairros e edifícios antigos. Tem aumentado o investimento para arrendamento de curta e de longa duração, assim como para hotéis — os projetos mais lucrativos. A procura existe e é um mercado que vai sobrevivendo à crise.

1| THE WINE
Port wine has been one of Portugal’s most famous exports since the 18th century, produced exclusively in the Douro Valley (the world’s first demarcated wine region) north of Porto, and matured in Gaia, across the river from the center of the city. No visit to Porto is complete without a visit to the Gaia warehouses, where you can taste the different varieties for free. You’ll notice that many of them have English names, since British merchants have been responsible for much of the trade.

2| THE CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
Porto University is the only one in the world with two former students distinguished with the Pritzker Prize (Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto Moura). It’s a city known for the quality of its architecture, not just the monumental baroque but also its contemporary constructions. The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art by Siza Vieira was the first to attract the world’s attention but then came Rem Koolhaas’ landmark Casa da Musica and the city was firmly placed on the map of architourism destinations.

3| THE GOLDEN INTERIORS
With all the gold discovered in Brazil, Portugal’s churches were turned into treasures of baroque art. It naturally started in Lisbon but soon moved north from the capital, and Porto came to have the most impressive golden interiors in the country. The lucrative port wine trade gave the city new wealth, reflected in public and private buildings. Entering São Francisco Church today is guaranteed to leave anyone breathless at first sight, with its incredible profusion of golden carvings. But that’s not the only church covered in gold from floor to ceiling, as you’ll find out when you discover Santa Clara Church, Carmo Church or countless others throughout the city.

4| THE MONUMENTAL TILES
The most striking images of Porto are its blue-and-white tile murals covering entire walls, especially church exteriors. To many who visit Portugal for the first time, these baroque pieces of art make the buildings look like gigantic pieces of porcelain and are found all over the city, including in the cathedral’s cloisters.

5| THE CITYSCAPE
Cross the river by walking across the landmark Dom Luis Bridge and you’ll reach Cais de Gaia, the waterfront where the Port Wine warehouses are found. The most impressive attraction is, however, the view. It’s undoubtedly one of the world’s most beautiful cityscapes, rising from the river across the hills. You’ll see church towers, baroque palaces, and colorful houses together as if out of a storybook. The beauty is enhanced further by the presence of the historic boats that were used to transport the wine down the river and from there to around the world.

5| A PAISAGEM
Atravessando o Douro a pé pela emblemática Ponte Dom Luis I chega-se ao Cais de Gaia onde se encontram os armazéns do vinho do Porto à beira-rio. No entanto, o que mais impressiona aqui é a vista. É sem dúvida uma das paisagens urbanas mais belas do mundo, com a cidade virada para o rio, subindo as colinas. Vêem-se torres de igrejas, palacetes barrocos e casas coloridas num conjunto que parece saido de um livro de contos. Tudo fica ainda mais belo com a presença dos históricos barcos rabelo que eram utilizados para transportar o vinho rio abaixo e daí para todo o mundo.

6| THE MEDIEVAL RIVERFRONT
Reminiscent of Lisbon’s Alfama, this medieval riverfront neighborhood is the former residence of the fishing and port communities. Now rundown, it’s been slowly renovating and will continue to do so until at least 2030. Although the revitalization of the area is still in progress, it’s already been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site due to its “outstanding urban landscape with a 2,000-year history” and its “rich and varied” architecture.

6| A RIBEIRA
Fazendo lembrar o bairro de Alfama em Lisboa, a zona ribeirinha medieval é o antigo bairro das comunidades portuárias. Agora bastante degradado, tem sido lentamente renovado e continuará a sê-lo até pelo menos 2030. Mas apesar dessa reabilitação ainda não ter terminado, a UNESCO já declarou a zona como Património Mundial pela sua “extraordinária paisagem urbana com uma história de 2000 anos” e pela sua arquitetura “rica e variada”.

7| WORLD BEAUTIES
See any list of the world’s most beautiful bookshops, most beautiful cafés or most beautiful train stations, and you’ll see Porto. São Bento Station has a French-style Beaux Arts exterior but inside are around 20,000 typically-Portuguese tiles creating magnificently huge images related to the history of Portugal and of transportation. Then there’s the historic Majestic Café with its Art Nouveau architecture that goes from the marble façade to the elegant, mirrored interior. And a third beauty of the world is the Lello & Irmão bookshop, featuring an Art Nouveau façade and a Neo-Gothic interior that includes a grand staircase and stained glass. Interestingly, one of the world’s best-selling books of all time has links to this shop and to the city of Porto: Author J. K. Rowling lived in Porto when she started writing her first “Harry Potter” novel and was a “Lello” customer.

8| THE ART NOUVEAU
In addition to the Majestic Café and the Lello & Irmão shop, there are countless other Art Nouveau gems in the city. Downtown, especially in and around Rua 31 de Janeiro, are a number of century-old façades behind which survive old bookshops or have been reborn as contemporary fashion boutiques. The most famous examples are Reis & Filhos, Casa Vicent, and Livraria Latina. Down the hill by Largo de São Domingos is the attractive Farmácia Moreno and the Araújo & Sobrinho stationary store. Also walk down Rua Cândido Reis and Rua da Galeria de Paris and you’ll see a number of surviving Art Nouveau buildings.

9| THE TIMELESS SHOPS
More timeless shops are found all over the city, especially around the Bolhão Market. They date from the time when products from Brazil, China, and other former Portuguese colonies were valued, especially the coffee, tea and chocolates. They’re the original “gourmet stores” and are still in business. They remain wonderful surprises in a world where large international chains are taking over everywhere, and the best places to find local cheeses, sausages and wines. Especially worth a look is “A Pérola do Bolhão” for its distinctive Art Nouveau façade with tiles recalling the spice trade. Also don’t leave the city without passing by Casa Oriental by the landmark Clérigos Tower, once specializing in tea, coffee and chocolates but now known as a charming neighborhood grocery store with salted cod hanging by the entrance.

10| ACCESSIBILITY
Porto’s modern airport has ranked among Europe’s best since 2008, soon after its expansion. Low-cost airlines such as Ryanair have joined TAP Portugal in linking the city to more destinations, and it’s also just around 2 hours and 45 minutes away from Lisbon by train. A new state-of-the-art metro (under and overground) also opened in 2002, so getting to and around the city is now easier than ever.

10| ACESSIBILIDADE
O moderno aeroporto do Porto tem sido distinguido como um dos melhores da Europa desde 2008, pouco depois da sua ampliação. A MARKET BACK TO PRAÇA DA FIGUEIRA
Until the 1950s, Praça da Figueira was home to the city’s most central market. After its demolition, the square become a mostly-empty open space for pigeons and more recently for skaters. We now want a new market for Praça da Figueira, something like Rome’s Campo dei Fiori in the sense that it would be an open-air market, but offering something different. We see it as a showcase for the best products of the city and the country, mostly gourmet specialties and wines. This square is the terminal for tram 15, with thousands of tourists passing by every week, so the market is guaranteed to always have curious customers, especially when it also does have cafés and a view of the castle. Locals and tourists alike would be able to see show cooking, sample Portuguese cheeses, chocolates and drinks among other products, and enjoy a cultural and social experience that would also keep small and big local producers in business.

O MERCADO DE VOLTA À PRAÇA DA FIGUEIRA
Até à década de 1950, a Praça da Figueira teve o mercado mais central da cidade. Depois da sua demolição, a praça tornou-se um espaço vazio ocupado sobretudo por pombos e mais recentemente por jovens skaters. Queremos ver o mercado regressar, desta vez mais parecido com o de Campo dei Fiori em Roma, ou seja, um mercado ao ar livre. Mas seria um mercado diferente, funcionando como uma montra dos melhores produtos locais e nacionais, especialmente vinhos e produtos gourmet. A praça é o terminal do elétrico 15, tendo milhares de turistas a passar todas as semanas. Clientes curiosos estão por isso garantidos, sobretudo quando já são atraidos pelas esplanadas e pela vista do castelo. Lisboetas e turistas também teriam a oportunidade de assistir a “show cooking,” provar queijos, chocolates, vinhos e outras especialidades, desfrutando assim de uma experiência cultural e social que também manteria pequenos e grandes produtores nacionais em atividade.

RUA AUGUSTA

RUA AUGUSTA (RE)DESIGN(ED)
At one end of Rua Augusta is the MuDe Design Museum and on the other is the Internacional Design Hotel, but in between are the typical high street retailers and tourist restaurants that could use some style and refinement. We’d like to see all business owners agree on collaborating with locals artists who’d create artistic window displays that would change regularly. Not only would this attract attention to the shops and bring potential new customers, but would also make Rua Augusta Lisbon’s most creative street, dedicated to style and design. And while street performers already add some life to it, we’d like to see urban furniture and public art by Portuguese designers placed on this street between Rossio Square and the triumphal arch, in a way as an open-air gallery previewing the creativity found inside MuDe. Finally, we’d also like to see shop entrances given uniform awnings and signage as a way to regulate and avoid the plastic/tourist kitsch that occasionally invades many of the façades.

RUA AUGUSTA REDESENHADA
Num lado da Rua Augusta está o MuDe (Museu do Design) e no outro o Internacional Design Hotel. Pelo meio, no entanto, estão as típicas cadeias de lojas internacionais e restaurantes turísticos que beneficiariam de um pouco mais de estilo e de requinte. Gostaríamos de ver os proprietários concordar com a colaboração de designers locais para “montras artísticas” que mudariam regularmente. Isso não só atraíria mais clientes, mas também transformaria a Rua Augusta na mais artística da cidade, dedicada à criatividade e ao design. Os habituais artistas de rua já dão um pouco de animação, mas queremos mais, como mobiliário urbano e arte pública de artistas portugueses colocado entre o Rossio e o arco triunfal, de certa forma como uma galeria ao ar livre antecedente a toda a criatividade que depois se encontra no MuDe.
Os toldos e letreiros das lojas também deveriam ser uniformizados, regulando e evitando assim o plástico/kitsch turístico que tem invadido muitas das fachadas, e dando algum brio à rua mais movimentada da cidade.

DOWNTOWN ON MAPS
When Marquês de Pombal redesigned downtown Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, he envisioned what today would be called an outdoor shopping mall. While modern malls elsewhere in the city have stolen most of downtown’s business, it’s now time to make Baixa the big shopping center of Lisbon once again. One of the first steps is to manage it like an actual mall, placing maps around the grid of streets listing the shops and services available in the neighborhood. This is an area with wide, flat streets very easy to walk around, and with plenty of transportation (metro and bus) and parking options. These maps would also indicate the several car parks that do exist but that many seem to forget (there’s one in almost every square: in Praça da Figueira, Praça do Município, Restauradores, Largo do Camões, Calçada do Combro, and by Largo do Carmo).
One of the world’s most famous “outdoor shopping malls” is the pedestrianized Lincoln Road in Miami and it does include maps/shopping directories down the street.

MAPAS NA BAIXA
Quando o Marquês de Pombal redesenhou a Baixa depois do terramoto de 1755, imaginou que se tornaria o que hoje seria um “centro comercial a céu aberto”. Os centros comerciais modernos localizados longe do centro da cidade roubaram a maioria dos clientes da Baixa mas chegou a altura de fazê-la novamente o grande centro comercial de Lisboa. Um dos primeiros passos seria geri-la mesmo como um centro comercial, colocando mapas pelas ruas indicando a localização das lojas e serviços disponíveis na zona. As ruas largas e planas convidam a andar a pé e existem vários acessos de transporte público (metro e autocarro) assim como vários parques de estacionamento. Os mapas também indicariam esses parques, pois muitos lisboetas parecem desconhecer ou esquecer a sua existência (encontram-se em quase todas as praças: na Praça da Figueira, Praça do Município, Restauradores, Largo do Camões, Calçada do Combro, e junto ao Largo do Carmo).
Um dos “centros comerciais ao ar livre” mais famosos do mundo é a Lincoln Road em Miami e é um exemplo na colocação de mapas/diretórios de lojas na rua.

A SHOPPING TRAM IN BAIXA
This isn’t likely to happen any time soon or ever, considering that tram lines are disappearing, but we’d love to see a special “shopping tram” circulate through the streets of Baixa as a way to take shoppers around the neighborhood. This way, rain or shine, it would turn shopping in Baixa into one of the most fun and attractive social and tourist experiences in the city. It would certainly help rejuvenate the area, by not only attracting more customers but also new businesses and investors.

O ELÉTRICO DAS COMPRAS NA BAIXA
É pouco provável ou até mesmo impossível que isto venha a acontecer, agora que linhas de elétrico estão a desaparecer, mas gostariamos de ver um “elétrico das compras” a circular pelas ruas da Baixa, transportando potenciais clientes pelo bairro. Assim, faça chuva ou faça sol, fazer compras na Baixa seria uma das experiências sociais e turísticas mais divertidas e atraentes da cidade. Certamente ajudaria a rejuvenescer o comércio local, não só atraindo mais clientes mas também novos empreendedores e investidores.

If it’s possible in medieval villages and old city centers like Óbidos, Monsaraz and Guimarães, it’s also possible in Alfama. Lisbon’s “medieval village” maintains the layout and soul of the past, but modern-life conveniences have ruined part of its charm. Cables, antennas and satellite dishes proliferate in the neighborhood, and as it’s happened in historic villages around the country, it’s time to make an effort to find more appropriate space for them, hidden from view. Alfama is one of Lisbon’s most emblematic and most-visited tourist areas, and its authenticity is a great value to the city. It should not lose its roots and atmosphere as a medieval neighborhood, and should re-emphasize its cultural traditions, such as the tile panels or the placement of its iconic basil plants out the windows and doors. A greener, more colorful and cleaner Alfama is invaluable to the future of Lisbon.

Se é possível em vilas medievais e em centros históricos como Óbidos, Monsaraz e Guimarães, também é possível em Alfama. A “vila medieval” de Lisboa mantém o desenho e a alma do passado, mas as conveniências da vida moderna tem diminuído parte do seu encanto. Cabos e antenas proliferam no bairro, mas como aconteceu em muitas aldeias históricas pelo país, está na hora de fazer um esforço para encontrar espaço mais apropriado para estes componentes dissonantes, retirando-os de vista. Alfama é o bairro mais emblemático e um dos mais visitados em Lisboa pelos turistas, e a sua autenticidade é imprescindível para a cidade. As suas raízes e ambiente de bairro medieval devem ser preservados, e deve-se reforçar as suas tradições, desde os painéis de azulejos à colocação dos manjericos nas janelas e portas. THE CREATION OF LISBON “RIADS”
The city of Marrakech was able to transform many of the crumbling houses of its medina (“riads”) into small boutique hotels, renovating much of the area in the process. This also resulted in the development of a “Moroccan style” which helped attract a more sophisticated and culture-conscious tourist and turned Marrakech into a hip destination. We want to see something similar happen to Lisbon’s own “medina,” the Alfama. The best way to renovate the charming-but-crumbling properties is to turn them into smart short-term accommodation, and there are countless buildings with wonderful views, patios, dazzling tiles and stucco decoration waiting for the right investors. Such accommodation already exists in the neighborhood and they’re perfect examples — the Palacete Chafariz D’el Rei and Palácio Belmonte. But as seen in Marrakech, the more the better, and Alfama could become a destination in itself, attracting travelers just for its signature stylish accommodation.

A cidade de Marraquexe foi capaz de transformar muitas das casas degradadas da sua medina (“riads”) em pequenos hotéis de charme, resultando na renovação de grande parte da zona. Now that the red light district of Cais do Sodré is becoming a new mecca for alternative bars and music clubs, it’s time to plan its future growth. The new hotspots have been smart in keeping the retro/naughty atmosphere of the neighborhood, and we envision a new “vintage district.” Praça de São Paulo would be the center of it all, becoming home to vintage fashion boutiques, antique shops and cozy cafés. That’s the best way to give new life to this most perfect of all Pombaline squares, now much neglected as a home to the homeless and paupers. Perhaps the upcoming renovation of Ribeira Market nearby will help in making investors realize that this is prime real estate with real character and potential.

CAIS DO SODRÉ VINTAGE
Agora que o Cais do Sodré tornou-se uma meca de clubes e bares alternativos, há que planear o seu futuro. Os novos espaços têm inteligentemente sabido manter o ambiente “retro” do bairro, e nós imaginamos um novo “bairro vintage”. A Praça de São Paulo seria o centro, atraindo lojas de roupa vintage, antiquários e cafés acolhedores. Esta é a melhor maneira de fazer rejuvenescer a mais pombalina das praças que neste momento se encontra muito degradada como poiso dos sem-abrigo e indigentes. MUSEU DE MARINHA

A CARAVEL ON THE TAGUS
Venice has its gondolas, Porto has its Rabelo boats, and Lisbon has its caravels. Or it should have. These 15th-century sailing ships, much used in the Portuguese and Spanish voyages of discovery, were mostly built in Lisbon, on the waterfront called Ribeira das Naus by today’s Praça do Comércio. A replica of a caravel should be docked by the city’s grandest square and open as a tourist attraction. It would be a “floating museum,” showing how the explorers lived at sea and how they carried all the Eastern goods so desired by Europe.
A similar project already exists in Madeira, where a replica of a 15th-century caravel is used for trips around the coast, but in Lisbon it should mostly be an iconic presence on the Tagus.

A CARAVELA NO TEJO
Veneza tem as suas gôndolas, o Porto tem os barcos Rabelo, e Lisboa tem as suas caravelas. Ou deveria ter. Estas naus do século XV, muito usadas nas viagens dos descobrimentos portugueses e espanhois, eram construídas em Lisboa na Ribeira das Naus junto à Praça do Comércio de hoje. Uma réplica de uma caravela deveria ser instalada na zona ribeirinha perto da mais grandiosa praça da cidade como uma grande atração turística. Seria um “museu flutuante”, mostrando como os navegafores portugueses viviam no mar e como transportavam os “tesouros” orientais tão desejados pela Europa.
Um projeto semelhante já existe na Madeira, onde uma réplica de uma caravela do século XV é usada em passeios pela ilha, mas em Lisboa deveria ser sobretudo uma presença icónica no Tejo.

THE DISCOVERIES MUSEUM
Complementing the caravel on the Tagus, we’d like to have a museum explaining the European Age of Discovery pioneered by Lisbon. It would show how the world changed and became globalized for better and for worse, and how Lisbon was the natural starting point for that. Such a museum has actually been planned and announced several times, but the project never seems to go ahead. In the meantime, those interested in the Age of Discovery will have to visit the Ancient Art Museum, the Orient Museum and the Maritime Museum, three institutions that could certainly donate a few pieces of their collections to a future museum which would also make use of multimedia displays.

Complementando a caravela no Tejo, gostaríamos de ter um museu dedicado à época dos descobrimentos europeus em que Lisboa foi pioneira. Mostraria como o mundo mudou e se tornou globalizado, e como Lisboa foi o ponto de partida natural para esse processo. THE LUSITANO HORSE IN BELÉM
It’s also been planned several times, but we’d really like to finally see the equestrian activities of Lusitano horses in Lisbon. Ideally they’d return to their original space, the Royal Riding School, or to the gardens of Belém. The Lusitano is a Portuguese breed known for its elegance which has led to its appearance in film productions such as “The Lord of the Rings.” The ceremonies and costumes related to this breed date back to the 18th century, making them unique in the equestrian world.
Equestrian shows are held regularly at Queluz Palace, but could certainly become one of the great attractions of the capital.

O CAVALO LUSITANO EM BELÉM
Também já foi planeado várias vezes, mas gostariamos mesmo de ver animação de arte equestre ligada ao cavalo Lusitano em Lisboa. O ideal seria regressar ao seu espaço original, o Picadeiro Real, ou aos jardins de Belém. O cavalo Lusitano é uma raça portuguesa conhecida pela sua elegância, tendo sido escolhida para figurar em produções cinematográficas como “O Senhor dos Anéis.” Os trajes e toda a tradição ligada a esta raça mantém-se desde o século XVIII, constituindo um património cultural equestre único no mundo.
Espetáculos equestres realizam-se regularmente no Palácio de Queluz, mas poderão com certeza tornar-se uma das grandes atrações da capital.

AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE

A FREER AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE
It’s a fact that most people in Lisbon have suburban habits when it comes to shopping, preferring big American-style malls and traveling by car. They’d probably park inside the stores if that was possible, including in Avenida da Liberdade, the “promenade.” This doesn’t happen in most other major luxury avenues around the world such as 5th Avenue in New York, the Champs-Élysées in Paris or Via dei Condotti in Rome which don’t allow parking. The transformation into a more luxurious and lively Avenida da Liberdade should be through the expansion of the sidewalks and elimination of traffic lanes on the sides. There would be no need for new underground car parks if two of the central lanes were also closed to traffic and became parking spots for residents.
Now that there are pavement cafés down the avenue, its real luxury is the possibility of enjoying the outdoors in the city center, within walking distance of Baixa and Chiado. It’s imperative to make it cleaner, more environmentally friendly, and more inviting.

AVENIDA DA LIBERDADE MAIS LIVRE
É certo que a maioria dos lisboetas têm hábitos suburbanos no que diz respeito às compras, preferindo centros comerciais à americana e o transporte individual. Só não estacionam o carro dentro das lojas porque isso não é possível, incluindo na Avenida da Liberdade, o “passeio público.” Isso não acontece na maioria das grandes avenidas de luxo do mundo, como a Quinta Avenida em Nova Iorque, a Champs-Élysées em Paris ou a Via dei Condotti em Roma, que não permitem sequer estacionamento à porta. A transformação da Avenida da Liberdade numa verdadeira avenida luxuosa e animada passa pelo alargamento dos passeios e eliminação das faixas laterais de circulação automóvel. Para estacionamento não seria sequer preciso construir parques subterrâneos, bastando eliminar duas das faixas centrais de trânsito especialmente para o estacionamento de moradores.
Agora que já existem quiosques/esplanadas espalhadas pelos passeios, o verdadeiro luxo da avenida é a possibilidade de se desfrutar do ar livre no centro da cidade, a passos da Baixa e do Chiado, e é necessário torná-la mais limpa, mais amiga do ambiente e mais convidativa.

This 19th-century estate was built by a port wine producer and was now given a contemporary interior by designer Nini Andrade Silva.
The spa offers water-based treatments and the “wine room” presents wine tastings, with many selections also found on the wine list at lunch or dinner. Almost half of the choices presented are from the Douro region, whose vineyards can be admired from any corner of the property, from the gardens to the pool.

This was the first wine hotel in Portugal, producing its own wine and olive oil. The eleven rooms have fabulous views of the vineyards or of the river, and guests can enjoy the wines in the cellar and tasting room. The décor maintains the aura of the 19th century (when the estate was built), and the original chapel still stands.
