The Marquis of Pombal (the man responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake) stands on a monumental pedestal overlooking his city from this square.
Cars circle around it, while behind the statue is Edward VII Park, and in front is the city's main avenue, Avenida da Liberdade.
Most of the buildings that surround the square are mid-20th century constructions that replaced the smaller and more elegant buildings that originally stood here. Most of them are hotels and offices.

Uma estátua do Marquês de Pombal (figura histórica pelo seu papel na reconstrução de Lisboa após o terramoto de 1755) encontra-se no topo de um monumento nesta praça virada para a Baixa.
Automóveis circulam à sua volta, enquanto que por trás está o Parque Eduardo VII e em frente a Avenida da Liberdade.
A maioria dos edifícios desta praça datam do século XX, obras que substituíram outras mais pequenas mas mais elegantes. A maioria dos que se vêem agora são hotéis e escritórios.
