PRAÇA DE TOUROS DO CAMPO PEQUENO

Lisbon's bullfighting arena is much more than that. It's a 19th century neo-Moorish construction made up of red brick and arches where bullfighting still takes place every Thursday from Easter to October, but it's actually more of a stage for major concerts of national and international bands throughout the year.
On the lower level is a small shopping mall with a food court and a multiplex cinema.
Those interested in seeing the bullfights should know that they differ from those in Spain and other countries. In Portugal it starts with a horseman in 18th century uniform teasing the bull with spears, followed by other men on foot to further provoke the animal with a pink cape. Then come the "forcados," eight men grabbing the bull by the horns in a "man vs. beast" show. Portuguese law prohibits the killing of the bull (in public, at least, as it's so weakened that it's slaughtered out of the arena).
Naturally this spectacle is met with great opposition from animal rights groups but the traditionalists keep it alive every year, although this is the only place in Lisbon where you can still see it.
The arena stands in the center of a large tree-filled square surrounded by busy avenues.

A praça de touros de Lisboa é muito mais que isso. É um edifício do século XIX feito de tijolo maciço e com detalhes mouriscos onde há tourada todas as quintas-feiras desde a Páscoa até Outubro, mas onde também se realizam concertos de bandas e artistas nacionais e internacionais durante todo o ano.
No piso de baixo encontra-se um centro comercial com vários restaurantes e salas de cinema.
Os interessados em ver as touradas deverão saber que em Portugal o espetáculo é diferente dos que se vêem em Espanha e noutros países. Em Portugal começa com um cavaleiro vestido com traje do século XVIII a atormentar o touro com bandarilhas, seguido depois por outros homens a pé a provocar o animal com uma capa côr-de-rosa. Esses são seguidos pelos "forcados," oito homens que agarram o touro pelos cornos. A lei portuguesa proíbe a matança do animal (pelo menos em público, já que o touro enfraquecido é morto mais tarde fora da arena), mas mesmo assim defensores dos direitos dos animais lutam pelo fim desta tradição. No entanto ela vai continuando, mantida viva pelos seus apreciadores, apesar de este ser o único local em Lisboa onde ainda se pode ver um espetáculo do género.
O edifício encontra-se no meio de uma praça rodeada de árvores e avenidas muito movimentadas.
