This square is a perfect example of the Pombaline style, the type of architecture that arose under the direction of the Marquis of Pombal after the 1755 earthquake.
It is surrounded by identical buildings, overlooked by a church, and with the traditional Portuguese cobblestone pavement in the center.
There's been a church on this site since the 15th century, but the present one dates from after the earthquake. It was partly inspired by the design of Mafra Palace, and the interior has eight chapels and a beautifully painted ceiling.

Esta praça é um belo exemplo do estilo pombalino que nasceu depois do terramoto de 1755 com a reconstrução da Baixa de Lisboa pelo Marquês de Pombal.
É uma praça rodeada por uma igreja e edifícios de caracteristicas idênticas, e com calçada portuguesa no centro.
Sempre houve uma igreja neste local desde o século XV, mas a que se vê hoje data do século XVIII depois do terramoto. Foi em parte inspirada no Palácio de Mafra, e no interior vêem-se oito capelas laterais e uma bela pintura no teto.
