The initial reaction upon seeing Lisbon's 25 de Abril Bridge is wondering how it looks so much like San Francisco's Golden Gate. The resemblance is explained by the fact that both bridges were built by the same American company.
It was originally called Salazar Bridge after Portugal's dictator, but had its name changed to the date of the revolution that reinstated democracy in the country.
Its central span is actually longer than that of the Golden Gate, and it links the capital to the south of the country, especially the beaches of Costa da Caparica to which all of Lisbon seems to escape to in the summer.
Underneath it is Docas de Santo Amaro, docks with a marina and a series of warehouses which have been renovated to become bars and restaurants.
In addition to the views from Docas, the bridge is best admired from the top of the Monument to Christ on the other side of the river.

Para quem chega do exterior, a reação quando se vê a Ponte 25 de Abril pela primeira vez é notar a curiosa semelhança com a Golden Gate de São Francisco. Essa semelhança é explicada pelo fato de ambas as pontes terem sido obra da mesma empresa americana.
A ponte lisboeta foi inicialmente chamada Ponte Salazar mas foi rebatizada após a revolução de 1974 com a data da mesma.
O percurso central da 25 de Abril é maior do que o da Golden Gate, e serve de ligação da capital portuguesa ao sul do país, especialmente às praias da Costa da Caparica no verão.
Por baixo da ponte encontram-se as Docas de Santo Amaro, com uma marina e um grupo de armazéns antigos renovados e transformados em bares e restaurantes.
Juntamente com a das Docas, a melhor vista da ponte é do Cristo Rei do outro lado do rio.
