The residence of the Portuguese president was originally built in the 16th century and bought by King João V a century later. It served as a royal residence for a few decades, renovated in the late 19th century (giving it its current look), and turned into the official home of the president in 1911.
Guards stand at the entrance which leads to the gardens and the building, while to the left is the Museum of the Presidency. The museum chronicles the history of the Portuguese republic through the presidents' official portraits and personal objects, many of them gifts from notable national and international personalities.
In front of the palace and museum is the Afonso de Albuquerque garden, a dedication to the Portuguese viceroy of India. A statue of Albuquerque stands on a pedestal in the center of the garden.

A residência oficial dos presidentes da República Portuguesa foi originalmente construída no século XVI e comprada por Dom João V um século depois. Serviu de residência real durante décadas, foi renovado no século XIX (dando-lhe a aparência de hoje), e tornado residência oficial da Presidência em 1911.
Soldados guardam a entrada que leva até aos seus jardins, enquanto que à esquerda vê-se o Museu da Presidência. O museu apresenta a história da República Portuguesa através dos retratos oficiais dos presidentes e seus objetos pessoais, muitos deles ofertas de notáveis figuras nacionais e internacionais.
Em frente ao palácio e museu está o Jardim Afonso de Albuquerque, dedicado ao governador da Índia portuguesa. Um monumento com a sua estátua encontra-se no centro do jardim.
