The white towers of this monastery stand out in Lisbon's skyline but it doesn't seem to get as many visitors as other monuments. Yet it offers one of the most fantastic views of the city from its rooftop terrace, and its extraordinary tiled interior is one of the most fascinating spaces in Lisbon (it holds the world's largest collection of baroque tiles -- around 100,000 of them).
La Fontaine's fables are told in a series of 38 tile panels around the serene cloisters, while an eerie mausoleum holds the tombs of the Bragança dynasty. One of them is that of Catherine of Bragança, a Portuguese princess who married Charles II and therefore became the Queen of England in 1662.
Queens, New York was named after her.

As torres deste mosteiro sobressaem na paisagem lisboeta, mas curiosamente não é dos monumentos mais visitados. No entanto oferece uma das mais fantásticas vistas da cidade do seu terraço assim como um extraordinário interior em grande parte decorado com azulejos (possui o maior conjunto de azulejos barrocos do mundo -- cerca de 100 mil).
É por isso um dos espaços mais fascinantes de Lisboa, especialmente quando se vêem as fábulas de La Fontaine contadas numa série de 38 painéis. Há também um claustro e o panteão dos Braganças, a última dinastia real portuguesa. Um dos túmulos é o de Catarina de Bragança, a princesa portuguesa que se tornou rainha de Inglaterra após o seu casamento com Carlos II em 1662. O bairro de Queens em Nova Iorque foi a ela dedicado.
