Part of Ajuda Palace, this manicured garden predates the city's larger botanical garden in the Príncipe Real district. It was laid out in 1768 right behind the former royal residence, and although after the Napoleonic invasion many of its plants were taken to Paris, there is still a large number of species seen today, particularly from Portugal's former colonies.
A wonderful baroque fountain decorated with mythical creatures stands in the center, while trees and statues overlook the river and 25 de Abril Bridge in the distance.
Two of the most extraordinary trees are the umbrella-like "Schotia afra" and a similarly-large dragon tree which is now 300 years old.

Este jardim botânico faz parte do Palácio da Ajuda e é mais antigo do que o outro jardim botânico da cidade, no Príncipe Real. Foi criado em 1768 por trás da residência real, e apesar de Napoleão ter levado várias das suas plantas para Paris, ainda existem muitas espécies diferentes, especialmente das antigas colónias portuguesas.
Uma maravilhosa fonte barroca decorada com figuras mitológicas é vista no centro do jardim, rodeada de árvores e estátuas viradas para a Ponte 25 de Abril, bem visível daqui.
Duas das mais extraordinárias árvores que podem ser vistas são a "Schotia afra" que parece um enorme guarda-sol e o dragoeiro igualmente grande e que conta mais de três séculos de vida.
