This baroque church has twice been a victim of a major catastrophe -- first in the 1755 earthquake, and again in a fire in 1959 that destroyed its gilded decoration and precious paintings.
The interior was never restored after the fire, and remains a striking sight.
The city's African community has always chosen the square in front of this church as their favorite meeting point, said to be because the church once had a black priest.

Esta igreja barroca já foi duas vezes vítima de uma enorme catástrofe -- primeiro no terramoto de 1755 e novamente em 1959 num violento incêndio que lhe destruiu a decoração em talha dourada e preciosas pinturas.
O interior nunca foi restaurado, sendo hoje uma imagem impressionante.
A comunidade africana local tem sempre escolhido o largo em frente a esta igreja como ponto de encontro, supostamente porque a igreja teve uma vez um padre negro.
