It opened its doors for its 300th anniversary on July 4th, 2011, but this church is usually closed. To visit it you'll have to ring the bell next to the main entrance, and what you'll see inside is one of the most impressive churches in the city.
It served as a model for many other baroque buildings in the country, having been built during the golden years of King João V in the 18th century. The rich décor is mostly in marble, and is adorned with paintings by some of the greatest local artists of the time.
All that survived the earthquake of 1755, as did one of the houses that can be seen right outside. Painted yellow, it's one of the oldest still standing in the city, and is a rare example of the architecture at the time of the Discoveries. A second example is just around the corner on Rua dos Cegos.

Abriu as portas quando completou 300 anos no dia 4 de julho de 2011, mas esta igreja encontra-se quase sempre fechada. Para a visitar terá de tocar à porta ao lado da principal, e o que verá no interior é uma das igrejas mais impressionantes e importantes da cidade. Serviu de modelo para muitas outras construções barrocas do país, tendo sido mandada construir durante o periodo áureo de D. João V no século XVIII. A rica decoração é quase toda em mármore, apresentando também pinturas de alguns dos maiores artistas do país na época.
Tudo isto resistiu ao terramoto de 1755, assim como uma das casas que se encontra logo ali ao lado. Pintada de amarelo, é uma das mais antigas da cidade e é um dos raros exemplos de arquitectura da época dos Descobrimentios. Um segundo exemplo encontra-se ao virar da esquina na Rua dos Cegos.
