A s Lisbon grew in the mid-20th century, it expanded north, away from the river. Residential and business districts were born around long, broad avenues, today collectively known as Avenidas Novas ("New Avenues"). Originally many palatial mansions lined these avenues, but the majority has sadly been torn down and replaced by dull office buildings. There are a few survivors, but overall this is not the most aesthetically-pleasing area of the city. However, most who visit Lisbon will go through it to reach some of the city's best museums (the Gulbenkian is not to be missed), and many will also be making it their home, as a large number of the city's hotels are located here.
Despite all the urban sprawl, there is some interesting architecture to admire, including many of the city's most controversial buildings (such as the Amoreiras to the west).
In between it all there are some excellent restaurants to look for, as well as the city's most popular shopping malls.
Here we present all there is to see and do, not just in the Avenidas Novas, but in all the districts north of the center of the city.

Q uando Lisboa se expandiu em meados do século XX, fê-lo para norte, afastando-se do rio, resultando em zonas residenciais e de negócios em longas avenidas. Elas ficaram conhecidas como "as avenidas novas" onde originalmente foram construídos belos palacetes que tristemente foram desaparecendo ao longo do tempo, dando lugar a edifícios pouco atraentes. Algumas construções originais ainda sobrevivem, mas em geral esta não é a zona mais bonita da cidade. No entanto, muitos dos que visitam Lisboa acabam por passar por aqui a caminho de alguns dos melhores museus da cidade (o de Calouste Gulbenkian é imperdível), e muitos acabam mesmo por ficar pela zona, visto um grande número dos hotéis da capital estar aqui situado.
Apesar do planeamento desordenado, ainda existem alguns exemplos arquitetónicos interessantes e algumas das construções mais recentes e controversas da cidade (como as torres das Amoreiras).
No meio de tudo isto ainda se encontram alguns destacados restaurantes, assim como os mais populares centros comerciais.
