Maria Helena Vieira da Silva was one of Portugal's biggest artists in the 20th century. Born in Lisbon in 1908, she began exhibiting her paintings in Paris in 1930 when she married her husband Arpad Szenes, an Hungarian artist. She later made the French capital her permanent home with her husband, and became the first woman to receive the French government's Grand Prix National des Arts.
Most of her work is abstract compositions, and many examples can be seen at this museum along with works by her husband. Those works were left to the Portuguese state in her will, and can be seen together with temporary exhibitions of paintings by artists who were influential to or influenced by either Vieira da Silva or Szenes.
This site (a former silk factory) was chosen for the museum because before moving to Paris, Vieira da Silva and Szenes had their studio nearby.

Nascida em Lisboa em 1908, começou a expor as suas pinturas em Paris em 1930 quando casou com Arpad Szenes, um artista húngaro. Mais tarde mudou-se para a capital francesa onde foi a primeira mulher a receber o Grand Prix National des Arts do estado francês.
Muitas das suas obras são abstratas, e inúmeros exemplos podem ser vistos neste museu juntamente com obras do seu marido. Estas obras foram deixadas a Portugal após a morte da artista, e podem ser vistas juntamente com exposições temporárias que mostram o trabalho de outros artistas relacionados com Vieira da Silva ou Szenes.
Este local (uma antiga fábrica de seda) foi escolhido para o museu porque antes de se mudar para Paris, Vieira da Silva tinha o seu atelier aqui perto.
