Portugal's National Gallery is the Ancient Art Museum, housed in a 17th century palace.
Its most significant works include Hieronymus Bosch's Temptation of Saint Anthony and Albrecht Dürer's Saint Jerome, but the main highlight is a 15th century masterpiece attributed to Portuguese artist Nuno Gonçalves, called the Panels of Saint Vincent. It is one of the first collective portraits in European art, showing sixty portraits of various personalities believed to be venerating Saint Vincent. One of them is Prince Henry the Navigator in his most famous illustration.
In addition to paintings, there is also a collection of sculptures and decorative arts, much of it related to the Age of Discovery when Portugal made Europe's first cultural exchanges with Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Of particular interest is the Monstrance of Belém made with gems and gold brought back by Vasco da Gama, and Japanese screens showing the Portuguese arriving in Japan.

O mais importante de todos os museus nacionais é o Museu de Arte Antiga, situado num palácio do século XVII.
As obras mais emblemáticas da sua coleção incluem As Tentações de Santo Antão de Hieronymus Bosch e São Jerónimo de Dürer, mas nenhuma se destaca tanto quanto a obra prima do século XV atribuida a Nuno Gonçalves, os Painéis de São Vicente. Eles mostram sessenta retratos de várias figuras que se acredita estarem a venerar São Vicente, sendo uma dessas figuras o Infante Dom Henrique no seu retrato mais famoso.
Juntamente com a pintura, há também uma coleção de escultura e artes decorativas, em grande parte relacionadas com a época dos Descobrimentos quando Portugal fez os primeiros intercâmbios entre a Europa e a Ásia, África e Américas. Aqui o destaque vai para a Custódia de Belém feita com preciosidades trazidas por Vasco da Gama, assim como para os biombos Nanban que ilustram os portugueses a chegar ao Japão.
