MUSEU MEDEIROS E ALMEIDA

If you enjoy private residences that were turned into museums such as New York's Frick Collection or London's Wallace Collection, you'll want to visit Lisbon's Medeiros e Almeida Museum.
It's housed in a late-19th-century mansion where António de Medeiros e Almeida (a renowned businessman) lived and collected works of art. Highlights of the 25 rooms include a Rembrandt portrait, paintings by Rubens, François Boucher and Tiepolo, sophisticated English and Swiss clocks which arguably make up the world's most notable private collection of such objects, French furnishings, some of the first Chinese porcelain to arrive in Europe, and a silver tea set used by Napoleon engraved with his symbolic "N".
In the beautiful "Lake Room" you'll find 18th-century tile panels representing each continent and each of the four seasons surrounding a marble and bronze fountain which originally stood in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles.

"PORTRAIT OF AN OLD MAN" - TIEPOLO

It was one the collector's most important acquisitions: A painting by Tiepolo from the early-18th-century depicting an old philosopher.

Foi das aquisições mais importantes do colecionador: Uma obra de Tiepolo do início do século XVIII retratando um velho filósofo.

"VERITAS"

This magnificent marble statue represents a life-size half-naked woman partially covered by a remarkable "transparent" veil. She's the goddess of truth in Roman mythology and was sculpted by Raffaelle Monti in 1853. It once stood in London's Royal Academy of Arts and was acquired by Medeiros e Almeida in 1972.

"VERITAS"

Esta magnífica estátua em mármore representa uma mulher seminua em tamanho natural parcialmente coberta por um notável véu "transparente". Trata-se da deusa da verdade na mitologia romana e é assinada pelo escultor Raffaelle Monti em 1853. Esteve exposta na Royal Academy of Arts em Londres e foi adquirida por Medeiros e Almeida em 1972.

REMBRANDT PORTRAIT

This 17th-century painting acquired at an auction in Paris as a magnificent self-portrait of Rembrandt is now seen by experts as a depiction of the famous artist by one of his disciples. Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum fought to get it but it remains in this museum's Piano Room.

RETRATO DE REMBRANDT

Esta pintura do século XVII comprada num leilão em Paris como sendo um magnífico auto-retrato de Rembrandt é agora vista por especialistas como uma obra de um dos seus discípulos retratando o famoso artista. O museu Rijksmuseum de Amesterdão lutou para adquiri-la mas encontra-se agora na Sala do Piano deste museu.

TAZZA ALDOBRANDINI

This silver piece is part of a group of twelve now spread through different collections around the world, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. They were all commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini (later Pope Clement VIII) in 1570, representing the twelve Roman Caesars. This one shows emperor Galba on a plate alluding to emperor Tiberius.

TAZZA ALDOBRANDINI

Esta peça de prata dourada pertence a um conjunto de 12 que se encontra espalhado por várias coleções do mundo, desde o Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nova Iorque ao Victoria & Albert Museum de Londres. Foi tudo encomendado em 1570 pelo cardeal Ippolito Aldobrandini (mais tarde Papa Clemente VIII), representando os 12 Césares Romanos. Esta representa o imperador Galba e o seu prato é alusivo ao imperador Tibério.

SISSI CLOCK

This marvelous clock was a gift of prince Louis of Bavaria to his cousin Sissi, empress of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It is topped by a white peacock (symbol of the Bavarian princes) and the rest is a mixture of crystal and lapis lazuli mounted on silver. It's a precious masterpiece that still operates today.

RELÓGIO SISSI

Este relógio é uma maravilha oferecida pelo príncipe Luis da Baviera à sua prima Sissi, imperatriz do império austro-húngaro. Em cima está um pavão branco (símbolo dos príncipes da Baviera) e todo o resto é uma mistura de cristal de rocha e lápis-lazúli montado em prata. É uma obra prima preciosa que ainda hoje funciona.

BREGUET WATCH

This precious pocket watch is made of gold, platinum and enamel. When placed in a metal box it becomes a desk clock. It was commissioned by General Junot to the House of Breguet in Paris in 1808 and was acquired by Medeiros e Almeida at a London auction in 1964. The high price at which it was sold attracted the attention of the British and Portuguese press at the time.

RELÓGIO BREGUET

Este relógio de bolso é uma preciosidade em ouro, platina e esmalte. Introduzido numa caixa de metal transforma-se em relógio de mesa . Foi encomendado à Casa Breguet em Paris pelo general Junot em 1808 e foi adquirido por Medeiros e Almeida num leilão em Londres em 1964. O surpreendente valor alcançado atraiu a curiosidade da imprensa inglesa e portuguesa da época.

"CATHERINE OF BRAGANZA" - JACOB HUYSMANS

This royal portrait shows the Portuguese princess/queen of England Catherine of Braganza painted by the Flemish artist Jacob Huysmans in 1667, wearing a royal silk dress next to the British crown. Sharing the same space in the museum are other pieces related to the queen and her husband, such as a clock that stood in the queen's apartments in Whitehall, and a mirror allusive to the royal wedding. Another portrait of Catherine by the same artist is found in London, in the National Portrait Gallery.

"CATARINA DE BRAGANÇA" - JACOB HUYSMANS

Este retrato real da infanta portuguesa e rainha de Inglaterra Catarina de Bragança foi criado pelo artista flamengo Jacob Huysmans em 1667. Catarina vê-se vestida com o traje real de seda e com a coroa de Inglaterra ao lado. No mesmo espaço do museu encontram-se outras peças relacionadas com D. Catarina e seu marido, como um relógio de noite que esteve nos apartamentos da rainha em Whitehall, e um espelho alusivo ao casamento real. Outro retrato da rainha do mesmo autor encontra-se em Londres na National Portrait Gallery.

"THE TAX COLLECTOR" - BRUEGHEL

The Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel II recreated this image dozens of times in different dimensions. It's a satirical composition dated from 1616, meant to stigmatize the fiscal pressure that the Netherlands endured during the Spanish occupation.

"COBRADOR DE IMPOSTOS" - BRUEGHEL

O pintor flamengo Pieter Brueghel II recriou esta imagem dezenas de vezes com dimensões diferentes. É uma composição satírica datada de 1616, pensada para estigmatizar a pressão fiscal que os Países Baixos suportaram durante a ocupação espanhola.

"VIRGIN OF THE MILK" - RUBENS STUDIO

This depiction of the Virgin of the Milk (here accompanied by saints) dates from the 17th century and was created in Rubens' studio where the Flemish artist painted works completely or partially, or simply supervised his disciples.

"VIRGEM DO LEITE" - ATELIER DE RUBENS

Esta representação da Virgem do Leite (aqui acompanhada por santos), tem origem no século XVII na oficina de Rubens onde o artista flamengo pintava inteira ou parcialmente as suas obras, ou simplesmente supervisionava os seus discípulos.

"THE DEPOSITION"

This group of Flemish wooden sculptures represents the deposition of Christ in the tomb. It dates from the 16th century and its male figures curiously wear hats similar to that of Prince Henry the Navigator which apparently were also in style in 16th-century Flanders.

"DEPOSIÇÃO NO TÚMULO"

Esta conjunto escultórico flamengo em madeira representa a deposição de Cristo no sepulcro. Data do século XVI e é curioso verificar-se que as figuras masculinas usam chapéus iguais ao de Infante Dom Henrique, também moda na Flandres do século XVI.
