Lisbon is explained through the collection of this museum inside an 18th-century palace. It tells the history of the city from prehistoric to modern times, with archaeological remains, sculpture, and paintings, but most interesting of all is the model of the city as it looked before the destruction by the 1755 earthquake. The courtyard gardens are also worth a visit, dotted with live peacocks and ceramic fauna and flora by Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro.
Another highlight is the large collection of azulejos.
The building has a curious history, built for King João V's mistress who happened to be a nun from a convent nearby.

A história de Lisboa é contada através da coleção deste museu situado num palacete do século XVIII. Vai da pré-história ao século XX, mostrando achados arqueológicos, escultura e pintura, mas a obra mais curiosa é uma maquete de Lisboa tal como ela era antes do terramoto de 1755.
Uma visita deve incluir um passeio pelos jardins onde se encontram pavões juntamente com fauna e flora em cerâmica, criações do escultor Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.
Outro destaque é a grande coleção de azulejos.
O palacete tem uma história curiosa: foi mandado construir por Dom João V para a sua amante, uma freira de um convento na zona.
