Tourists don't seem to be able to resist sitting at the outdoor tables of this café in Rossio Square (more tables are placed on the opposite side of the building facing Praça da Figueira).
Of all the historical cafés in the city, this is the one that lost the most charm over the years, but it's still a perfect place to relax and watch the world go by in Rossio.
The interior has sadly become modernized and looks like any other café, despite its past as one of the most popular meeting places for Lisbon's intellectuals.
Still, it offers a good variety of pastries, and the strong coffee is always good.
A curious fact about this place is that it was responsible for the introduction of the French croissant in Portugal in the early 20th century.

Poucos turistas conseguem resistir à esplanada deste café no Rossio (mais mesas são colocadas no lado oposto do edifício, viradas para a Praça da Figueira).
De todos os cafés históricos lisboetas, este é o que perdeu mais encanto durante os anos, mas ainda é um bom local para descansar e admirar todo o movimento no Rossio.
Infelizmente, grande parte do interior foi modernizado, parecendo-se agora com qualquer outro café da cidade, apesar do seu passado como um ponto de encontro de intelectuais.
Apesar das mudanças, ainda oferece uma boa e variada pastelaria, e o café é sempre ótimo.
Um fato curioso sobre este café é que foi o primeiro a servir croissants em Portugal no início do século XX.
